HFT Rule Question

Ok so how do you guys interpret the HFT Shooting rule for slings. Are they considered an adjustable component. What I am trying to figure out is can a sling be attached then removed for the standing lane. I would think it is not considered an adjustable component.

Shooting
A. A rifle sling attached to the rifle at only two points may be used.
B. Adjustable components on the stock may not be adjusted during
a match. No butt-hooks or thigh-rests are allowed.

Get an adjustable sling(what I used when shooting hunter) and take up the slack when shooting from the bucket.

Well if it is considered an adjustable component then that would not be legal as you would be adjusting it. 

If this has to do with Cajun's email the MD or bring it up at the shooters meeting of whichever match you are going to. I've seen some adjust the sling and others leave it loose. If it's your match then it's your decision.

Well I am looking at all matches and since i run my own club also want to know how the rules are interpreted on this matter. That's all. Rules are rules and the match directors shouldn't be making them just to fit there matches. 

As well while you can't adjust the scope turrets or stock parts you can adjust the bipod and seat and parallax wheel a part of the scope, and while you can't adjust the scope above 16x you can change the mag how you please below that so........

Exactly and I will just go ahead and say the way I interpret it the sling could be removed and put on for standing and kneeling but wanted others opinion as well on how they interpret it also. Thanks for your input 

Ok so read it and read it and reread and also spoke with Chris Corey this morning on it and we are going to say it is an adjustable component hooked to the stock so it can not be adjusted or removed. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

I'm a little curious if you ever received a definitive answer to your rules question.

From our facebook conversation, you know how I interpreted the rule and why but it's just an opinion until someone in authority weighs in and makes that decision. As you said there's been several to offer an opinion with varying understanding. Just wondering if someone has gotten back with you and how you derived at your decision. Do we have a formal rules committee or not. Just need to know.

I interpret the rule to mean once the match begins and the sling is attached to the stock it becomes part of the stock and therefor fixed throughout the remainder of the match. Making it neither adjustable or removeable. I shoot in the Open division where there are no such provisions for adjusting and or the removal of the sling during the match.

No Raymond I have not gotten a definite answer yet. I was told to send and enquiry to the BOG so they can come to final agreement on it. One seems to think it is ok and one it is not ok so they will need to discuss it further so they can all come to an agreement on it. I have not had time to send in the email to them yet. Been playing catch up on work since i been back from Cajuns and vacation afterwards. I will email the inquiry in and see what they come up with. On a side note it was not in my way at the Cajuns just leaving it on. 

Thanks for your response and raising this questions. I see it as an opportunity to learn about the use of slings but also wondering where a director could get an immediate answer should a situation arise during a match. When directing golf tournaments in the past it was understood the director had the last say but in fairness to all involved we had on-call resources available (USGA) should an abstract ruling be necessary.

Why not have this question answered on the forum where it was asked.      

Yes i understand that and from what i have been told each time in a case where it would be questionable. The match director decides on the fly and that is what it would be. That's why I asked the match director at the Cajuns and he leaned to it staying on the gun so I left it on. Most of the BOG committee guys always tell me in cases like that the match director can make the call. So that should answer your question there I believe. Running matches that is kind of what they have told me as well. That's why I have read the rules over and over again lol ?
