Newbie here, have a question about the size of focus wheels. I have a March scope that I’ll be using for FT. March makes two sizes of large focus wheels, one is 3.5”, the other 4.5”.
Having zero FT experience, which size would be optimal? I assume the larger size would allow a bit more exact fine tuning, but not sure.
Any advice appreciated.
Depends. You may want the "comma" style wheel. I believe the problem typically is that at distances between 40 and 55 yards it's hard to see much change in focus when you move the wheel a tiny bit as compared to a 10 yard target where you can typically see a change in focus. So the bigger the wheel the more "change" on a small movement of the wheel. The comma wheel are shaped like a comma and give you the extra movement but only where you need it. So from 10-45 the wheel diameter might change from 2" to 4" and from 45-55 it would all be 4" (for example). To have a side wheel that is absolutely huge risks putting unwanted pressures on your scope while in the case or if you lay it down or simply knock it.
If you wanted to try it out first before buying, because they can be expensive, try mocking one up with foam from the big box store. Very cheap, easy to modify. Push it onto your focus know and gently turn it to see what works best for you.
I'd go for the 4.5" wheel of those two choices but I prefer 5 or 6" wheel. I have a 6" wheel on my March. You just have more space between the yardage marks at longer distances. With practice though you will do fine with whatever wheel size you choose.
You are correct. the bigger wheel allows for more "resolution" so you can get more numbers on it. so you can put every yard between 45 and 55, and every yard from 10 to 20... or what ever you find works for you. but the bigger wheel will let yo do that......
downside is .. its bigger, might change how the gun fits in the case, and or your gun carrier.
The 4.5" would be better than the 3.5" but something closer to 6" would be optimal. I don't have any personal experience with the March scope, but often those smaller OEM wheels can be fitted with an extension... sort of like this one on my Aeon scope
I've seen a few FT shooters do pretty well with a 5" wheel but I like 5.75-6.0" better. The Nautilus shaped wheels actually give you an effective diameter of approximately 7-8" on the long distance range but with a smaller wheel. They look similar to this one I've recently been working on for my Vector scope.

Scott, where can you get a 5 or 6 inch wheel for the March? March sez their large focus wheels fit over the mid-sized focus wheel which requires the purchase of both a mid-sized as well as a larger sized wheel. Good marketing or poor planning? ?
