Please Help Identifying Pellets

Hi Guys and Gals,

A while back, AZ sent me some pellets that helped me shoot 248 and 249 in benchrest, so they were perfect for my gun.  Realizing that it may have just been that particular batch, I still have another problem, I don't know what they are.  They look a lot like JSB Monster originals, except for the slightly protruding skirt near the bottom.  Can someone please help identify these?  Your detective work will be greatly appreciated by my TM1000.

They're very similar to the old discontinued H&N Sniper Magnum pellets. I used to like them a lot, though they were always hard to find in stock even before they were discontinued. There had been an off-brand knockoff on Amazon for a while that was selling clone pellets after H&N discontinued that line, so maybe it was them it you got those more recently.

awilde, thank you for responding.  If they are the H&N's, it figures they would be discontinued.  I got these from Alan about 7-8 years ago, so anything new with this shape would be out.  Here are a few more pictures.  Besides the weird skirt, they have a dimple on the inside.  I also thought they might be some kind of Daystate.  What I do know is that if I can find them, I'll be buying the remaining stock!

This is how Alan sent them to me, so no packaging to go by.

Forgot to add, they weigh 13.30, and skirt diameter is 4.52.

I saw the Sniper Magnum's, but they have a pleated interior skirt.  Otherwise, very close.

It looks like they could be the JSB Match Diablo Monster Exact pellets going by your provided weight and skirt dimensions:

Thanks for that, awilde.  The dome on top of those Monsters looks more curved and the skirt waist shorter, but the Beast on that same page looks almost identical to my eyes, although the weight is too heavy.  I wonder if there was ever a Beast-shaped pellet made in a lighter weight.

The problems with these pellets was that not all barrels liked them, so JSB issued their Re-designed model:

And there are quite a few barrels that like them.

I think both of them deserve a try/test.

A CRITICAL aspect of these heavy pellets is how your probe seats them into the chamber/leade.

It is so critical that in 0.22" there are two "depths" of skirt (Shallow and Deep).
That does not exist in the 0.177" version, but it may point out to a measurement you need to take from the old batch and see if they are still using the same design.

Thanks, Hector.  I've been shooting JSB Monster's, weighed, inspected, and sized, but what I have is not as accurate as what AZ sent me.  I'm beginning to suspect that maybe they were Monster's, but either an older run that came in the black/white/yellow/red tin like the picture awilde sent (no longer available, of course), or simply a different run than what I have that just happened to fit this gun perfectly.

Have you tried the re-designed?

Perhaps AZ lubed those pellets?

Have you tried different lubes? Minute MV differences can make a barrel shoot better, or worse, it all depends on the barrel's harmonics.

Thank you, Hector.  I tried redesigned and it hated them.  They don't feel lubed, but it's been a long time, so maybe they were back then.  It couldn't hurt.  What is the preferred lube of the day?  I might still have some Slick 50 laying around.  I snagged the FX version of Monsters to try out tomorrow.  The tin even says the skirt is 4.52.  We'll see................

I always try TWO lubes because I have not found rhyme nor reason to foretell which barrels will prefer which lube.

And the process starts with the pellet that already shoots best in that barrel at that speed.

a)  Baked Pledge.- You take a tin of pellets and split it between three paper clips metallic mesh desk holders. Two short squirts into the holders without spraying the pellets themselves. Swish them around about 50 times.
Bake in a toaster oven at around 270 °F for three minutes
Let cool.
If you did your job well, you will find that the pellets are mildly sticking to each other, swish them around again a few times to separate them and put them back into the tin

b) T-9.- Get a strip of lint-free cloth, about 6" wide and 14" long
Put a "line" of the lubricant across the middle of the cloth, perpendicular to the long direction
Place the pellets on one side of the lube line and by raising alternately the right and left sides, make the pellets cross the line a lot of times You will need to "gather the ends" to prevent spilling pellets all over.
Once you are done "hammocking them", return to the tun to dry.

One of these methods will show a marked improvement "from the get go".

From there on, it is mostly a matter of tuning the harmonics to the pellet's traverse time.

Hector, "bake in a toaster oven."  My friend, you have clearly gone over the edge and I'm afraid there is no return for you!  Does your wife even allow you in the kitchen anymore? 🙂  Pledge as in furniture polish?  Boeshield T-9? 

I tested the FX version of JSB Monster's today, and my gun hated them.  But, surprisingly, after testing 5 others, I shot a benchrest 244 with Daystate Sovreign's using a cheap 16X scope.  Perhaps with a better scope and a little T-9 I can make those six-9's go away.

Toaster ovens cost $10 at the Dollar store. I do not use the kitchen's one, LOL! And I am the one that cooks every day, BTW.  LOL!

I may be over the top, but it is what works for my barrels.

Yes, Pledge as in furniture polish (it is the least expensive and most convenient source of "silicone wax" available).
And Boeshield T-9, yes. Originally developed by Boeing for the lubrication of aircraft generators.

As it is always the case, to first 80% of  improvements take 20% of the effort, the remaining 20% of improvements take 4 times more effort.
