Comparison between 2240 barrels

I'm just getting started on this project... 

I'm wondering if anyone still on CO2 has any before and after results with a long crosman barrel compared to a Lothar Walther barrel?  Or any experience switching over.  I did search the web but couldn't find anything.  It looks like I can buy one from their website that's 23.8 inches long which I would like.  I also just got my chrono in the other day so I wont get a chance to document velocities until Saturday.  I've been taking good notes so far so if I do get the new barrel I can see what it does.  I want to see how accurate I can get my 2240 out to 50 yards.  I've taken it out less then 5 times in the past month but will be heading out at least every weekend for the foreseeable future.  Before I got my JSB, HN, AA pellets in the mail I was using a variety of crosman pellets and could sometimes get .5 or less at 10 yards and what appears to be 1.5' at 50 yards (only with crosman pointed that I ran out of and the new ones don't look the same....).  I have a steel breech and about a 23' barrel that I believe is a crosman but can't be too sure, I ordered it years ago (and believe I was drinking) and can't find any documentation.  It's also bulk fed.  Given the pellet results from my NP2 with the new pellets I suspect that the 2240 will tighten groups up a bit even with the current barrel.

,..The biggest question mark in the build will ultimately be the mounting of the barrel, be it floated or barrel banded and how consistent the interaction is from barrel to breech , breech to tube , hamonics, etc etc, Your pellet of choice may also change.  But the barrel itself is capable of better groups than that , the rest is on you.. Also , refining the trigger and sourcing a supersear will also knock some group size off the 1.5 inches ////   ID say take the plunge , you can always go back to the crosman barrel

Alan, shoot an email or call Roy @ Mountainair custom airguns . He will answer your questions and make suggestions.  A crosman service center that buy, sell, repair, build and lots of parts. Really want the 2240 to shine. Think hpa conversion . Hope this help. Tommy.

I'm basically with Rob on this one. One of the biggest problems with the Crosman 22xx platform based guns is barrel stability. No matter what barrel mfg you choose the problem will need to be corrected. The best way around to date has been a long tube with two barrel bands. One at the end of the breech tightened with the breech clamped to the tube, the other one as far down as the tube length will permit clamped tight to the tube and a close fit float to the barrel. In short I'd opt to ditch the 2240 tube and swap it for a 2260 tube.

Rob, that is interesting...  I see lots of people with aluminum or aftermarket barrel bands.  I'm not sure the material on mine but I suspect I could get an improvement.  I know the steel breech helped a lot given what I see out of stock accuracy so I would like to try experimenting with the band a bit.  It does give me something to think about though with solid consistency in the areas you mention.  I have a hard time imagining a free float barrel that is 23' long... I suppose if you are extra careful with the gun and have quality hardware...

As far as HPA goes...  I have pcp anxiety.  I have my eye on a few...  So as it stands, in my mind I will probably start off with something that people are winning competitions with consistently or that is known for quality.  Plus I have 2 giant 175cu ft CO2 tanks that would be rendered useless along with all my valves, tanks and adapters.  So far CO2 has done well for me even in Oregon cold weather (not Minnesota cold...).  But I have looked into his services and he's on my call list for sure.

You must have replied same time as me...  will look into the tube solution...  I was already wondering about wider surface area banding but if I can already buy parts to try the 2 band then I will try that.  Thanks.

Solid advice up there for a 24" barrel that is .435" or so in diameter.

Alan, I have some experience changing from Crosman to LW barrels... average group size @ 10m shrinks from about 3/4" to 3/8". Of course some do better and some do worse. The LW choked barrels will also take run-of-the-tin pellets and shoot the undersize pretty well (less flyers ? ). The LWs generally prefer the softer lead because of the deeper rifling and the pronounced choke. Keep in mind that it will be a blank, and will need to be machined.

P.S. CO2 should do well for your needs out to 50 yds ?
