A Vern.

Who remembers what a "Vern" is?

I want to say 36 yards.  Am I close?  I remember where it comes from but I don't remember the actual yardage for sure.

I think it was the distance from Vern's kitchen table/bench rest through an open window to his target.

41 yards.

I seem to remember it as being 28 yards. I also may be wrong, but I "think" it was because that was the useful range the poster had to use in his yard. This may be in error, but kind of stuck with me because I have a similar size range and that is a useful midrange.

Just a small example of what's been lost until posting is reenabled on the Yellow.

Not sure of the exact distance but you've nailed how the unit of measure was conceived. Classic!

41 yd seems to ring a bell. Then again my memory isn't the best.

A Vern was either 41 or 42 yards. It was the longest distance Vern was able to shoot at his house and involved shooting through the house into the yard.  Russ could tell us for sure  

Do you guys remember the Southern Airgun Testing Facility or something like that?

41 yards was the max distance Vern could shoot from inside his house to the backyard.  He had to keep a screen door open.  My childhood home was short of a Vern.  I had about 31 yards.  Used to prop open the screen door and shoot an ink pen with the RWS 48 scoped with a Beeman Bushnell 3-9X airgun scope.

Yup, 41 yards as I recall.
